There is no denying that the Old Line State is a beautiful place to live. Those who have recently moved to the state may have been charmed by its lovely weather. Unfortunately, for every yin, there is a yang. In 2010, the state experienced 563 severe weather systems. What type of damage can you expect to file on your Maryland homeowners insurance? The National Climatic Data Center of the U.S. Department of Commerce compiled these statistics for the year 2010:

  • There were 74 winter storms: 20 in January, 38 in February, 1 in November, and 15 in December.
  • There were five tornadoes: 1 in August, 1 in September, 2 in November, and 1 in December.
  • 82 floods occurred that year: 5 in January, 13 in March, 2 in May, 10 in July, 11 in August, 34 in September, 5 in October, and 1 in December.
  • The grand total of damages from all 563 events was $2.561 million.

Many believe that the weather is becoming more severe each year, in part because of global warming. With 109 less disasters in 2009, they could be right. Individuals who do not have sufficient Maryland homeowners insurance and other disaster related coverage should consider reviewing the situation – before Mother Nature strikes again.
